The Lizard ( Cornish Lysardh ) is a peninsula in the south-west of Great Britain . It is located in the former District of Kerrier in the county of Cornwall . The hinterland border is south of the town of Helston and south of the Helford River .

The name comes from the Cornish "Lys Ardh", which can be translated as "High Court". The term was changed to the English "Lizard", which however means " lizard ".

On the peninsula with the Stone Age Three Brothers of Grugith is Lizard Point , Great Britain's southernmost point. Here are the two octagonal Lizard Lighthouse lighthouses from 1752, only one of which is still in operation today. For a long time the shores of Lizard were feared as a grave for ships. The coast is recognized as the Heritage Coast .

telecommunications

British Telecom Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station , one of the largest satellite communication centers in the world, is located on the Goonhilly Downs . The Goonhilly wind turbine is also located here .

The Poldhu radio station is located in Poldhu Cove near Mullion on the west coast . Here a Marconid monument and museum commemorates the first successful transatlantic radio transmission in 1901, which was transmitted from here and received on Signal Hill near St. John's , Newfoundland .
