Burlington House is a building on Piccadilly in London . It was built in 1664 as the residence for the wealthy writer John Denham . Four years later he sold Burlington House to the Lord High Treasurer of Ireland, Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington , after whom it is named. Under Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington , the residence became a regular meeting place for leading artists, philosophers and scientists. Burlington House later came under the ownership of the Cavendish family and served as Henry Cavendish's residence. The Elgin Marbles were also kept here before they were sold to the British Museum . Burlington House was acquired by the United Kingdom in 1854 and has since housed various scientific societies as well as the Royal Academy of Arts .
