Piccadilly

The London Road Piccadilly is located in the district of City of Westminster and is one of the main avenues of the city. It extends for 1.3 km from Piccadilly Circus ( 51 ° 30 ′ 36 ″  N , 0 ° 8 ′ 4 ″  W ) in the northeast to Hyde Park Corner ( 51 ° 30 ′ 9 ″  N , 0 ° 9 ′ 3 ″  W ) in the southwest. It forms the border between Mayfair in the north and St James's and Green Park in the south. The numberingruns on the north side from east (house number 1, near Piccadilly Circus) to west (149, near Hyde Park Corner) and continues on the south side from west (house number 150 immediately east of Green Park is the Ritz Hotel ) to east (230, opposite Piccadilly Circus).

The street name comes from the tailor Robert Baker , who at the end of the 16th century and the early 17th century, the time demanded, as piccadills designated garments, high, stiff meander- down collar with spikes (from the Spanish picadillo ) to the Edges, manufactured. Around 1612 he built the house in the west of the city, which was soon referred to as Piccadilly Hall .

Attractions

Fortnum & Mason (house number 181), which specializes primarily in groceries , was founded in 1707 by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason . It is now considered one of the most luxurious department stores in the city.

The Ritz Hotel (house number 150), which opened in 1906, is one of the most renowned luxury hotels in the world. The neoclassical architecture was based on the design of the houses on Paris' Rue de Rivoli ; the design comes from the architects Arthur Davis and Charles Mewès and the engineer Sven Bylander . It was the first hotel in the country to have a private bathroom in each hotel room.

The Royal Academy of Arts (house number 50-52) has been located in Burlington House on Piccadilly since 1868 .

The Piccadilly Line of the London Underground runs under the road and opens it up with the stations Piccadilly Circus , Green Park and Hyde Park Corner . In addition, numerous bus routes run along the road , including routes 9, 14, 19, 22 and 38 (as of August 2005).

Others

In 1929, director Ewald André Dupont made the film Piccadilly - Night World with Gilda Gray and Anna May Wong . The Ritz Hotel on Piccadilly is known from several other films such as Notting Hill from 1999 with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant . Coordinates: 51 ° 30 ′ 25 "  N , 0 ° 8 ′ 32"  W.
