history

On March 10, 1906, the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway (predecessor of the Bakerloo Line) opened the first section of their main line. The Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (now Piccadilly Line) station followed a few months later on December 15, 1906.

The counter hall was originally located in a building designed by Leslie Green on the edge of the square. Due to the rapid increase in passenger numbers before and after the First World War , the station quickly reached its capacity limits. It was decided to build a new ticket hall including distribution level under the square , which should also serve as a pedestrian underpass. The renovation work began in February 1925 and cost the then proud amount of half a million pounds . Among other things, eleven escalators were installed.

Piccadilly Circus is now one of the few stations in central London that does not have a station building. The original building was closed on July 21, 1929 after the converted station went into operation. In the 1980s it had to give way to a new building on the corner of Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket. Because of the terrorist attacks of July 7, 2005 , the Piccadilly Line station was closed for a few weeks, and it was reopened on August 4.
