Fortnum & Mason is a department store in London (181 Piccadilly ) founded in 1707 by William Fortnum. It is owned by Wittington Investments , which is a sister company to Primark and ABF, among others .
history
William Fortnum was a servant in Queen Anne's household . He collected burned candle stubs from the palace, which he then sold. When he had enough money together, he opened a grocery store and persuaded his friend Hugh Mason to join him. Two generations later, grandson Charles Fortnum managed to establish himself in today's business fields.
In the Victorian era , Fortnum & Mason became increasingly famous for its culinary delights. The English snack specialty " Scotch eggs " was first produced by Fortnum & Mason in 1738. In 1886 Fortnum & Mason sold the first baked beans in England. In the period between the world wars, Fortnum & Mason expanded the range to include clothing, perfumes and kitchen items. In 1931 a branch was opened on Madison Avenue in New York City , followed by two branches in Japan in 2004.
Today, Fortnum & Mason's range of products is geared towards luxury items.
