Ewald André Dupont

Ewald André Dupont (born as Ewald Andreas Dupont ; * December 25, 1891 in Zeitz ; † December 12, 1956 in Los Angeles ) was a German film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Dupont's father was editor-in-chief at the Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung . After his time at the university, Dupont became editor of the Berliner Morgenpost in 1911 . Since he was friends with various people from film, he turned to film and in 1916 the first screenplays for detective films were made. From 1918 Dupont was then a member of the editorial board of the journal Der Film .

Dupont worked as a journalist on a film section for BZ am Mittag before writing scripts for Richard Oswald , Joe May and Paul Leni . His first directorial work was in 1918, a twelve-part detective series starring Max Landa . Commissioned by and for Henny Porten , he created a film adaptation of Die Geierwally in 1921 . The highlight of his film work was the silent film Varieté (1925) with Emil Jannings and Lya de Putti , a jealous drama in the circus environment that became a global success.

He then received engagements in the USA and Great Britain from 1926 , where he made early sound films in various language versions until 1931. In London in 1929, Dupont directed the first German-language sound film with the drama Atlantik . After a brief return to Germany emigrated Jewish director in 1933 over England in the USA into exile . From 1939 he worked as a journalist and in the following years worked mainly as a writer and director for B-films and television series. He also ran an agency for film talent. He could no longer build on his earlier successes.

Dupont was married to the actress Gretl Dupont . He died shortly before his 65th birthday as a result of his cancer.
