John Denham

Sir John Denham FRS (* 1615 in Dublin , † March 10, 1669 in London ) was an Irish writer.

Life

Denham was the son of Sir John Denham the Elder. Ä. and his wife Eleanor. After attending a Latin school , Denham studied at Trinity College , Oxford. After successfully completing his studies, he was immediately admitted to the bar.

On June 25, 1634, Denham married his wife Ann. During the Civil War, Denham was an ardent royalist who defended Farnham Castle . From 1650 to 1652 Denham stayed in the Netherlands.

On his return he settled in Bury , Surrey , where he married Margaret on May 25, 1665 after the death of his wife Ann.

With his poem Cooper's Hill , in which Denham addresses the river landscape of the Thames , the topographical poem was introduced into English literature.
