King Henry II had the original building demolished in 1155 after the civil war of anarchy . The castle was rebuilt at the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. At the beginning of the 15th century, Cardinal Henry Beaufort resided there , who in 1414 presided over the court in the trial against Joan of Arc . It is for this reason that Farnham Church was dedicated to this holy martyr. After the English Civil War in 1648, the castle was razed again . Since then, other buildings have been erected on the castle grounds; the most impressive of these are those built by Bishop George Morley in the 17th century.

The excellent curtain wall of the outer bailey has flanking towers with a square floor plan, a gatehouse from the 13th century and a large moat .
