Julian Trevelyan

Julian Otto Trevelyan (born February 20, 1910 in Dorking , † July 12, 1988 in Hammersmith ) was a British artist .

biography

Trevelyan came from the British noble family of the same name. He was the son of Robert Calverley Trevelyan and his wife Elizabeth van der Hoeven. His grandfather was the liberal politician Sir George Otto Trevelyan and his uncle the historian George Macaulay Trevelyan .

Julian Trevelyan first studied English literature at Trinity College (Cambridge) . Then he moved to Paris in 1931 and enrolled in Atelier 17 , Stanley William Hayter's printmaking school , and worked with artists such as Max Ernst , Oskar Kokoschka , Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso .

In 1935 Trevelyan bought Durham Wharf on the River Thames in Hammersmith, London . This became his home and studio for the rest of his life. He became a recognized surrealist and exhibited at the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries in London.

From 1950 to 1955, Trevelyan taught art history and etching at the Chelsea School of Art . From 1955 to 1963 he was a lecturer in graphics at the Royal College of Art , where he headed the graphics department, where he influenced many young graphic artists, including David Hockney and Norman Ackroyd.

Trevelyan died in Hammersmith on July 12, 1988.

Around 100 of his works, mainly prints, are now part of the Tate Gallery's collection .
