John Wesley Judd (born February 18, 1840 in Portsmouth , † March 3, 1916 in Kew ) was a British geologist , petrologist , mineralogist and volcanologist . He developed a system for the subdivision of igneous rocks and introduced the categories of ultra-basic and intermediate igneous rocks .

Life

Judd was born in Portsmouth and moved to London with his father when he was eight. Judd received his university education from 1863 at the Royal School of Mines of Imperial College London . He initially turned to petrology and worked as a laboratory assistant in the iron and steel industry. After an accident at work that made it impossible for him to work continuously, he worked as a petrologist and field geologist for the British Geological Survey . At his alma mater , the Royal School of Mines, he was professor of geology from 1876 to 1895. In 1877 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society , and between 1886 and 1888 he was President of the Geological Society of London . Among his students were the geologist, polar explorer and surveyor Edgeworth David and the paleontologist Frederick Chapman .

In 1891 he was awarded the Geological Society's Wollaston Medal . One of the founders of geological exploration in India, Lewis Leigh Fermor , named Juddite in his honor in 1908, a bright red and manganese-rich variety of the mineral arfvedsonite found in India .
