from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The James B. Macelwane Medal is a geoscientific award for young researchers given by the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

Usually one, later three, and finally five of these medals were awarded annually. The award honors exceptionally young scientists for important research contributions in the field of geophysics . The maximum age at the time of the award must not exceed 36.

The young talent award was introduced in 1961 and awarded for the first time a year later, but it has only had its current name since 1986. The medal is named after James Bernard Macelwane (1883–1956), the 13th President of the AGU from 1953 to 1956, who is recognized for his research work as well as for his commitment to teaching.
