Sonia Isabelle Seneviratne (born June 5, 1974 in Lausanne ) is a Swiss climate scientist . She has been a full professor for Land-Climate-Dynamics at ETH Zurich since 2016 .

Life

Seneviratne completed her Matura Type B and Baccalauréat Vaudois in 1992 at the Gymnase cantonal de Chamblandes in Pully . She then studied biology at the University of Lausanne from 1992 to 1995 and environmental physics at the ETH Zurich from 1995 to 1999 . From 1999 to 2002 she also completed her doctorate at the ETH. After her graduation she was from 2003 to 2004 Visiting Research Associate at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA . In 2005 Seneviratne returned to ETH Zurich and became senior assistant there. She held this post until 2007, when she became an assistant professor, which she remained until 2012. From 2013 to 2016 she was an associate professor. In 2016 she was appointed full professor.

In 2013 she became a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union , which awarded her the James B. Macelwane Medal in the same year .

Seneviratne is married and has two children. In addition to Swiss citizenship , she is also a Sri Lankan citizen .

Research activity

Seneviratne deals with climate extremes , land-climate processes and climate changes in her research .

She is one of the authors of the IPCC's special report on global warming of 1.5 degrees (2018). She has been one of the main coordinating authors of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report since 2018 .
