Goddard Space Flight Center
The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) of NASA , named after the rocket pioneer Robert Goddard is located in Greenbelt in Prince George's County in the US state of Maryland . Other related facilities are located on Wallops Island in Virginia .
The GSFC is a scientific research laboratory for unmanned space travel and was founded on May 1, 1959.
The GSFC is home to the World Data Center for Satellite Information ( WDC SI ), which registers all spacecraft worldwide, and the National Space Science Data Center, which publishes research results and other data from and about spacecraft.
The registration takes place through the numbering of the satellites and probes, the Spacecraft ID (SCID) is an 8 or 10 bit long binary number that was introduced and standardized by the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS).
