Winston Dugan, 1st Baron Dugan of Victoria
Sir Winston Joseph Dugan , 1st Baron Dugan of Victoria (born September 3, 1876 in Parsonstown , King's County , Ireland , † August 17, 1951 in London , England ) was a British major general during the First World War and governor of the Australian states of Victoria and South Australia .
Life
Dugan joined the British Army in 1898 and took part in the Second Boer War in South Africa . In 1904 he was promoted to captain and was then transferred to the British occupation forces in Ireland. In 1910 he married Ruby Lilian (Applewhaite-) Abbott.
During World War I he served on the Western Front and received multiple awards, including six mentions in the war report ( Mentioned in Despatches ).
After the war, he was given various leadership roles within the British Army. In 1928 he was appointed aide-de-camp of King George V. appointed. Two years later he was promoted to major general.
In 1934 he was appointed governor of South Australia and arrived in Adelaide on July 28 of the same year . During his tenure, he and his wife were so popular that a broad majority in parliament asked for an extension after it ended. However, he had already promised to take on the office of governor of Victoria next, and traveled to Melbourne in July 1939 .
In Victoria he made an important contribution to stabilizing politics in the 1940s. His term of office was extended five times. In February 1949 he returned to England, where he was appointed to the nobility ( peerage ).
In 1951 he died in Marylebone, London .
