Edric Bastyan

Sir Edric Montague Bastyan (born April 5, 1903 in Dorset , England , † October 7, 1980 in Adelaide , South Australia , Australia ) was a British Lieutenant General and Governor of the Australian states of South Australia and Tasmania .

Life

Bastyan initially trained as an officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and then served in several regiments until the outbreak of World War II , where he was mainly active in military administration.

After the end of the Second World War he served in the British Army of the Rhine and in the Eastern Command in Hounslow , where he was Chief of Staff from 1949 to 1950 . Subsequently, he was from 1950 to 1952 Director of Staff Services British Ministry of War ( War Office ) . He was most recently between 1957 and his transfer to the retirement in 1960 commander of the British Forces Overseas Hong Kong, the British overseas forces in the former colony of Hong Kong .

On April 4, 1961 he was appointed Governor of South Australia and held this office until June 1, 1968. In 1962 he was promoted to the nobility as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and from then on bore the suffix " Sir ".

After completing his tenure as Governor of South Australia, Sir Edric Bastyan was Governor of Tasmania from December 2 to November 30, 1968.

Bastyan was the last British governor in both Tasmania and South Australia.
