Hugh Binney
Sir Thomas Hugh Binney (born December 9, 1883 in Douglas , Isle of Man , † January 8, 1953 in Colchester , England ) was a British admiral and Governor of Tasmania .
Life
At the age of 13, Binney went as a cadet on board the training ship HMS Britannia . During the First World War he was aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth during the Battle of Gallipoli . In 1916 he was promoted to frigate captain. In 1922 he was transferred to the China station after his appointment as sea captain . He later commanded the battleships HMS Nelson and HMS Hood . In 1934 he was promoted to rear admiral . After the outbreak of World War II , he became a flag officer of the Orkney and Shetland Islands . In 1942 Binney was made admiral.
After the end of the war, Binney retired from military service in 1945 and became governor of Tasmania in December. 1950 his term of office was extended. After receiving treatment for inflammation of the gallbladder , he died of a pulmonary embolism in 1953 .
