Peter Underwood

Peter Underwood (born October 10, 1937 in Great Britain , † July 7, 2014 in Hobart ) was Governor of Tasmania from 2008 until his death . Before that, he served as a judge at the Supreme Court of Tasmania , most recently as its president.

Life

Underwood was born in Great Britain in 1937 and immigrated to Australia with his family in 1950 . After serving in the Royal Australian Navy , he graduated from the University of Tasmania with a law degree in 1960 and then worked in a law firm. In 1984 he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania . In addition, Underwood taught at various universities, including the University of Tasmania, for which he received an honorary doctorate in 2001 . In 2002 he was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia by Elizabeth II , and in 2009 he was appointed Companion of the Order of Australia .

In March 2008 he was proposed as governor by the Tasmanian Prime Minister Paul Lennon and sworn in on April 2nd. In 2012 his term of office was extended for a further four years.

Underwood died on July 7, 2014 of complications from liver cancer . He was married and had four children.
