Guy Green (politician)
Sir Guy Stephen Montague Green (born July 26, 1937 in Launceston, Tasmania ) was Governor of the Australian state of Tasmania from 1995 to 2003 and then briefly Governor General of Australia .
Guy Green is a trained lawyer . He was magistrate from 1971 to 1973 and from 1973 to 2003 he was chief judge at Tasmania's highest court. He also worked at the University of Tasmania , where he served as chancellor prior to his appointment as governor. He was also Chancellor of the Australian section of the Order of Saint John .
In 1995, he became the first native Tasmanian to be appointed governor of the state. In October 2003, Green retired and was replaced by Richard Butler . Since then he has held various honorary positions, for example he is involved in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery .
After Peter Hollingworth resigned on May 25, 2003 on allegations of cover-up of child abuse by priests, Green became temporary administrator of the office of the Governor General of Australia . He held this position until August 11, 2003, when the Governor of Western Australia , Michael Jeffery, was appointed as the new Governor General.
Orders and decorations
Green was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982 . In 1994 he was named Companion of the Order of Australia and in 2000 Commander of the Royal Victorian Order .
