Jenico William Joseph Preston, 14th Viscount Gormanston (born June 1, 1837 at Gormanston Castle , County Meath , Ireland , † October 29, 1907 in Dublin ) was an Anglo-Irish colonial administrator and governor of British Guiana and Tasmania .

Life

He was the eldest son of Irish nobleman Edward Preston, 13th Viscount Gormanston .

Preston joined the army in 1855 and fought as a lieutenant in India during the uprising of 1857 . In 1860 he resigned from the military and was treasurer of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1866 to 1868 .

In 1876, when his father died, he inherited his title of nobility as the 14th Viscount Gormanston , including the associated seat in the British House of Lords .

In 1885 he was appointed governor of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean , and from 1887 to 1893 he was governor of British Guiana . Preston was Governor of Tasmania from August 8, 1893 to 1900.

Family and offspring

On January 8, 1861, Preston married Ismay Louisa Ursula Bellew, a daughter of Patrick Bellew, 1st Baron Bellew and his wife Anna Fermina. After her death in 1875, he married Georgina Jane Connellan on October 29, 1878, a daughter of Peter Connellan and his wife Anne Maria Langrishe. He had four children with her:

  2. Ismay Lucretia Mary Preston (1882–1975), ⚭ (1) Ninian Crichton-Stuart , ⚭ (2) Archibald Maule Ramsay ;
  3. Richard Martin Peter Preston (1884–1965), ⚭ (1) Belle Hamblin, ⚭ (2) Edith Sheilah Forbes;
  4. Hubert Anthony John Preston (1885–1940), ⚭ Mary Pringle.
