William Allardyce

William Lamond Allardyce, 1910

Sir William Lamond Allardyce (born November 14, 1861 in Bombay , India , † June 10, 1930 in Wokingham , England ) was a British colonial administrator and governor of the Fiji and Falkland Islands , the Bahamas , Tasmania and Newfoundland .

Life

Allardyce was born the son of military doctor James Allardyce and his wife Georgina Dickson. After attending school in Aberdeen and Oxford Military College , he joined the civil colonial administration of the Colonial Office at the age of 18 . He rose quickly to his first post in the Fischi Islands. He learned the local language ( Fiji ) and acted as an intermediary between the natives and the British administration. He took over the duties of governor of the islands for two months. In 1904 he was appointed governor of the Falkland Islands; There he promoted the whaling industry and ensured the establishment of a first radio station in November 1912. His next station as governor took him from 1915 to 1920 to the Bahamas.

In 1898 he married in the Australian town of Bacchus Marsh Constance Angel. After her death in 1919, he married the widow Elsie Elizabeth Goodfellow a year later. On April 16, 1920, he was appointed the next governor of Tasmania. During his tenure, the Labor Party in particular campaigned for the governor to be abolished. A referendum failed both in September 1920 and later in November 1921. Allardyce, who was always popular with opponents and supporters of his office, resigned in the same month due to dissatisfaction with his salary as governor (then £ 2,750).

He left Tasmania on January 27, 1922 and was then ordered to Newfoundland, where he succeeded Charles Alexander Harris as governor. In 1928 he retired, but one year later he worked again as director for Viking Whaling Co. Ltd, an Anglo-Norwegian joint venture . In 1930 he died in Wokingham to cancer .
