Arthur Richards, 1st Baron Milverton

Arthur Frederick Richards, 1st Baron Milverton GCMG (born February 21, 1885 in Bristol ; † October 27, 1978 ) was a British governor and represented the British monarch in the British colonies of North Borneo , Gambia , Fiji , Jamaica and Nigeria .

Life

The son of William Rogers Richards from Bristol served as governor of North Borneo from 1930 to 1933 and of Gambia from April 12, 1934 to October 22, 1936. He was then appointed governor of Fiji on November 28, 1936, in this office he was also the High Commissioner for the British overseas territories in the western Pacific. He held this post until August 19, 1938, after which he was dethroned as Governor of Jamaica. He was there until July 1943, when he went to Nigeria and served there as governor from December 18, 1943 until February 5, 1948.

Richards was inducted into the Order of St. Michael and St. George as a Companion in 1933 . In 1935 he was made Knight Commander of this order, and in 1942 Knight Grand Cross . In the hereditary nobility he was in 1947 as Baron Milverton , of Lagos and of Clifton in the City of Bristol.

Richards died in October 1978 at the age of 93. His title passed to his eldest son, Fraser Arthur Richard Richards .
