The Hochrhönstraße runs in the Bavarian Rhön from Bischofsheim in the Rhön to Fladungen from south to north. It is the northern section of State Road  2288 ( St 2288 for short ), is 25 kilometers long, leads over the central plateau of the Rhön, known as the Lange Rhön , and is an important transport link in the Hochrhön. In winter, the Hochrhönstrasse in the Langen Rhön is often closed due to snow drifts after heavy snowfalls.

history

The Hochrhönstrasse goes back to plans from the 1930s. At the beginning of the Second World War , the construction of the Hochrhönstrasse began. The work was carried out by the Reich Labor Service , although it was not asphalted until the end of the war, only gravel.

The districts of Bad Neustadt an der Saale and Mellrichstadt agreed in 1958 to take over and expand the road. It was provided with an asphalt surface with the help of substantial subsidies from the Free State of Bavaria . The then State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, Alfons Goppel , opened Hochrhönstrasse in a ceremony on October 19, 1958 in Fladungen.

Route

The kilometers of Hochrhönstrasse go from Bischofsheim in the direction of Fladungen. The zero point is in Bischofsheim in the upper Brendtal at the intersection with the St 2088 at about 440 m above sea level. NN .

The Hochrhönstrasse rises steadily from there, crosses at 476 m above sea level. NN the B 279 and serpentines , following the Schwarzbach , up the Bauersberg and leads past the Rothsee at kilometer 4 and the Holzberghof hunting lodge at kilometer 6 . From here the Hochrhönstraße occurs at about 800 m above sea level. NN enters the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and reaches the Rhön plateau ( Lange Rhön ). From here, parking is only permitted in designated parking spaces and there is limited winter service (no salt spreading). The Hochrhönstraße leads to about 840 m above sea level. NN east of the 926 meter high Heidelstein past. Coming from the east, the road from Ginolfs joins it.

A central crossing point in the Hochrhön is at the Schornhecke , on the northern slope of the Heidelstein, at kilometer 10. There comes the St 2286 from Oberelsbach from the east and from the west, from Hesse , the state road (L) 3395 from Wüstensachsen . The road leads east past the Steinkopf (888 m) and the Stirnberg (902 m) and leads to the Black Moor . On this section of the route, roads from the Thüringer Hütte, from Roth, from Hillenberg and from Hausen meet the Hochrhönstraße from the east.

At the Schwarzen Moor, at km 18 at an altitude of 787 meters, the Hochrhönstrasse leaves the Lange Rhön and the biosphere reserve and leads down in serpentines to Fladungen. At kilometer 25 and about 410 m above sea level. The Hochrhönstraße ends at the junction with the B 285 .
