The Ilmenberg is a 787 meter high mountain in the Rhön , in the Long Rhön . It is best known for the ski lift on the eastern slope. The mountain is on Ostheimer Boden . The Thüringer Hütte is located on the eastern slope near the lift.

geography

The mountain lies on the eastern edge of the Lange Rhön. The steep eastern slope suggests an assignment to the eastern slope of the Langen Rhön , to the west it merges into the plateau of the Lange Rhön .

Thuringian hut

The place of the Thüringer Hütte is a former border area, which was mainly defended by land forces . In 1936, the community of Urspringen built a wooden house for the hay farmers on what was then the Thuringian-Bavarian border, which was given the name Thuringian Hut , which has remained to this day. The house was demolished four years later due to construction defects. The new building received a tavern and accommodation. The construction was subsidized by the Thuringian side with 15,000 Reichsmarks. The economy was able to resume operations in 1941. The municipality remained the owner.

After the Second World War, the house was looted. Over the years the furniture was added again. From 1961 to 1962 an outbuilding for equipment and vehicles was built. The construction cost around 20,000 German marks. In 1962 a connecting road from Urspringen to the Thuringian hut was built. This enabled operations to be increased. On December 4, 1964, the community sold the inn to the then tenant Harto Drescher. In 1976, the married couple Helmut and Hildegard Schmidt became the new owners, and their family is the third generation to run the inn.

The school camp of the same name is located nearby. It consists of five buildings. There is also a sensory park on the site.

Franziskusweg

The Franziskusweg begins at the Thüringer Hütte. It is a path of reflection and takes up the life of St. Francis , especially the song of the sun . The initiator was Günter Werner. He was supported by the parishes and the diocese of Würzburg . A support association was founded to maintain the infrastructure. To lay out the Franziskusweg cost around 230,000 euros.

An open chapel for 50 to 60 people was built at the Thüringer Hütte in 2006/2007. On May 12, 2007 the path and the chapel were inaugurated. It is the starting point and the end point of the path, a resting place and a shelter for hikers who seek shelter from a storm. The wood sculptures were created by students from the wood carving school in Bischofsheim and take up the song of the sun. In total there are ten of those on the way. Another seven stations are reading stations and deal with life's path.

The path has a length of five kilometers and first follows the county road and crosses the Oberelsbacher Graben . Then he turns off towards the Rhön-Park-Hotel , past the Altenfeld desert . Finally it turns down again to the former basalt quarry Kuhsprung. The Oberelsbacher Graben is crossed again. Then it's back up the mountain to the chapel.

Ski lift

In winter, if there is snow, a ski lift on the northeast slope is in operation. The valley station is at 720  m , the mountain station at 785  m . There are four runs between easy and medium, which basically all share the eastern slope and are mostly only ten to 15 meters apart.

The lift was built in 1970 and started operating on January 1st, 1971. A floodlight system was also installed. A ski rental is available.
