Penaia Ganilau
Ratu Sir Penaia Kanatabatu Ganilau GCMG , KCVO , KBE , DSO (born July 28, 1918 in Somosomo on Taveuni , Fiji ; † December 15, 1993 in Washington, DC , United States ) was the first President of the Republic of Fiji. His term of office began on December 8, 1987 and ended prematurely with his death. Previously, he had been Fiji's governor-general since 1983 , legitimately representing the Queen of Fiji, Elizabeth II .
Due to an illness, he had already transferred most of his duties to the Vice President and subsequent President Kamisese Mara in 1992 . Penaia Ganilau died in Washington, DC in the United States, where he was staying due to illness.
