Somosomo

Somosomo is a village on the island of Taveuni , which belongs to the Cakaudrove Province of the Northern Division of the Pacific island nation of Fiji .

Traditions

Somosomo is traditionally associated with the holders of the title Tui Cakau , the paramount chief of the Tovata Confederation . The long-time Chief Minister , later Prime Minister and finally President of Fiji's Ratu (Chief) Sir Penaia Ganilau was Tui Cakau , so he comes from Somosomo.

In his book The Golden Bough , published by Macmillan in London in 1894, JG Frazer describes the belief of the inhabitants that Somosomo is a constant exchange between gods and humans. Intermediate between the two are certain priests and chiefs who are regarded as holy persons . Another tradition refers to the god who rules over Somosomo with Qurai .
