Algernon Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore
Algernon Hawkins Thomond Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore , GCMG , PC , (born August 12, 1852 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † March 3, 1930 in London , England ) was a British politician and Governor of South Australia .
Life
Keith-Falconer was born the first son of Francis Alexander, 8th Earl of Kintore , and his wife Louisa Madaleine. He studied at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, and received his master’s degree in 1877. In 1873 he married Sydney Charlotte Montagu, daughter of George Montagu, 6th Duke of Manchester . They had two sons and two daughters.
From 1880, when he inherited his father's title on his death, he was a member of the House of Lords . In 1885 he became Chief Whip of the Conservatives in the House of Lords. In 1889 he was appointed governor of South Australia.
Keith-Falconer traveled extensively in Australia, far more than his predecessors. In 1891 he crossed the continent from Darwin to Adelaide . His tenure was marked by economic problems and several strikes , including a strike by miners at Broken Hill in 1892. As a Freemason, he became Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of South Australia.
Keith-Falconer resigned in 1895. Subsequently, he was Lord-in-Waiting at the court of Queen Victoria and then Edward VII. On his behalf, he was on diplomatic missions in Europe. Keith-Falconer died in London on March 3, 1930. His second son Arthur inherited the title , as the firstborn had already passed away.
