Premio Internacional La Farola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Premio Internacional La Farola (Spanish for: "International La Farola Prize") cycle race was held for the first time in 1982 and leads over the La Farola pass road in the Cuban province of Guantánamo in the east of the country. Bernd Drogan , who started for the GDR , won the premiere . Due to economic difficulties during the special period in peacetime , the tour was canceled after the eighth edition in 1989 and has not resumed since then.

Routing

The route leads over the 120 km long La Farola pass road (Spanish for: "The light mast") in the "Sierra de Purial". The road forms the end of the country road Carretera Central and connects the village of Cajobabo on the south coast with the city of Baracoa on the north coast.

It was built between 1964 and 1965, making it one of the first major projects after the revolution under Fidel Castro . Due to the demanding alignment, La Farola is one of the greatest technical achievements of modern Cuba and was not least chosen as the venue for the bike race.
