Frederick Holt Robe , CB ( 1801 - April 4, 1871 ) was a British major general and fourth governor of South Australia .

Military career

Frederick Robe joined the Royal Staff Corps as an ensign in 1817 , before he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1825 and transferred to the 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot in 1827, and in 1833 to the 87th Foot with the rank of captain. In 1846 he was appointed major . In 1840/41 Robe fought in Syria and was Military Secretary in Mauritius and Gibraltar .

Governor of South Australia

On October 25, 1845, Robe was sworn in as Governor of South Australia . He was very unpopular there. Among other things, Robe was interpreted as a breach of trust to introduce a special tax on the province's raw materials for Great Britain. This decision was then rejected by the South Australian Legislative Council . After his tenure ended, Robe was reassigned to Mauritius in another position.

Last years

In 1848 Robe was appointed Companion des Order of the Bath (CB) and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1854 . In 1862, he was appointed major general . Robe died on April 4, 1871. The South Australian city of Robe was named after him .
