Donald Beaumont Dunstan

Sir Donald Beaumont Dunstan (born February 18, 1923 in Murray Bridge , Australia , † October 15, 2011 in Adelaide ) was an Australian general and Governor of South Australia .

Life

Dunstan came from a poor background. At the age of 13, his father died of an injury from WWI . After graduating from the Royal Military College Duntroon , Dunstan served in Darwin and New Guinea during World War II . After the war he was transferred to the occupying power in Japan as a staff soldier. During the Korean War he was appointed commander in chief of the Commonwealth forces. He also took part in the Vietnam War and commanded the 1st Australian Task Force there . In the 1970s he made another career in the staff service and in 1977 was appointed Chief of Army , the Commander in Chief of the Australian Armed Forces.

On April 23, 1982 he was appointed governor of South Australia and remained so until February 5, 1991.

Dunstan died on October 15, 2011 at the age of 88 and was given a state funeral .
