Darling is a town with 10,420 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the municipality of Swartland , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located at the intersection of roads R315 and R307, 75 kilometers north of Cape Town at an altitude of 202 meters.

history

The area of ​​today's Darling was first mentioned on maps at the end of the 17th century under the name Groene Kloof ( Afrikaans for "green valley").

The town was founded in 1853 with the building of a church in the area of ​​the Langfontein farm . Darling was named after Sir Charles Henry Darling , who was then Deputy Governor of the Cape Colony .

    • The fictional character Evita Bezuidenhout lives here. This woman is embodied by the satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys , son of a South African and a German mother. During the apartheid period he was able to bypass censorship and criticize the white government in this role. The small theater with art and kit shop is housed in a former stationer's house.
