Swartland is Afrikaans for "black land". Jan van Riebeeck , governor of the Cape Colony , sent his official Cieter Cruyhos to the interior of the country for research purposes. He came back and told him that the landscape was black. This related to the color of the rhinoceros bush ( Elytropappus rhinocerotis ) in summer. After extensive rainfall it is so dark green that the color resembles black. In Bushmans Kloof there is a memorial stone for his journey in 1662. He named the valley Riebeek Valley in honor of the governor . Conflicts with the Khoikhoi in Zonquasdrift can be verified for 1683 .
