Moorreesburg is a town in the municipality of Swartland , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa , on the N7 road , 100 kilometers north of Cape Town at 152 meters above sea level. In 2011 the city had 12,877 inhabitants.
The main source of income for the city is the cultivation of grain. The Moorreesburg Cooperative produces around 140,000 tons of wheat per year on around 380 farms. The city is located in the winter rain area, i. H. the average annual rainfall of 364 mm falls mainly in the months of April to October.
history
Moorreesburg was named after the clergyman JC le Febre Moorrees (1807-1885) of the Swartland parish of the NGK . The settlement was established in 1879 on the area of the Hooikraal farm . There has been a residents' council here since 1882. The place gained the status of a municipality in 1909.
