Yzerfontein is a town in Swartland municipality , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 1,140 inhabitants. The city is on the R27 road , 80 kilometers north of Cape Town .

The city name is made up of the two Afrikaans words Yzer (iron) and Fontein (source). The city is located in the winter rain area , which means that the annual rainfall of 400 mm falls mainly in the months of April to October. Like all places on the South African west coast, the sea off Yzerfontein is suitable for surfing due to the strong, steady winds. The temperatures in winter are - due to the nearby Benguela Current - well below 10 ° C, but it is usually frost-free.

The Latin electoral and coat of arms motto of the place is: Mare didat flores decorant (German: "The sea feeds and the flowers decorate"). The main source of income for the place is fishing, as well as tourism in the wildflower season (August to October).

history

Until 1937 Yzerfontein was just a farm. It then received city status as a township . A separate city administration did not exist until 1989. On April 19, 2011 the West Africa Cable System , a submarine cable , reached the coast of Yzerfontein.
