Rolf Hammel-Kiesow

Rolf Hammel-Kiesow (born March 19, 1949 in Stuttgart ) is a German historian .


Rolf Hammel-Kiesow studied history, German and political science at the University of Heidelberg . There he did his doctorate with Hermann Jakobs . From 1978 to 1984 he worked in the Office for Prehistory and Early History of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, then in the Office for Monument Preservation. From 1993 he was head of the research center for the history of the Hanseatic League and the Baltic Sea region in Lübeck and at the same time deputy head of the archive of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck with a focus on "History of the Hanseatic League and the Baltic Sea region". He retired in 2016. His successor as head of the research center, which is now part of the European Hanseatic Museum, became the Hanseatic historian Angela Huang on July 1, 2017 .

Hammel-Kiesow has a teaching position at the history seminar of the University of Kiel . Since March 2008 he has been teaching there as an honorary professor . From 2010 to 2019 he was chairman of the Hanseatic History Association . He led the creation of the scientific concept for the European Hanseatic Museum .
