Bergrivier is a municipality in the West Coast district of the Western Cape Province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 61,897 on a total area of 4,407 km². The seat of the municipal administration is in Piketberg .
The municipality got its name from the second largest river in the Western Cape. The river rises in the mountains of Stellenbosch, winds through Paarl , Wellington , Gouda and Piketberg and finally flows into the Atlantic at Velddrif after 294 kilometers . The river has a catchment area of 7,715 km². The river got its name ( Afrikaans for mountain river ) in 1657 by Abraham Gabbema . The river forms the southern border of the municipality.

In 2011 the community had 61,897 inhabitants. Of these, 70.9% were colored , 16.9% white and 11.3% black.
84.9 % of the speakers were Afrikaans, 3.5% IsiXhosa and 2.4% English.
