Piketberg is a town in the Bergrivier municipality , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located about 133 kilometers north of Cape Town at the junction of the N7 with the R44 at the foot of the Piketberg Mountains; The highest point there is the Zebrakop at 1,459 meters above sea level. The city has 12,075 inhabitants (as of 2011).
The name of the city means outpost mountain. Piketberg was one of the outposts where farmers in the area were warned of attacks or other dangers from firing a cannon. The cannon can be viewed outside Piketberg High School today. The city was founded in 1836 when Sir Benjamin D'Urban donated the Grotefontein farm to the church . After the church was built, the city developed around it. Today the city is the administrative center of the Bergrivier municipality.
The city lies in a winter rain region . The average annual rainfall is 430 mm and the average temperature is 24 ° C.
