Velddrif is a small town in Bergrivier municipality , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located about 160 kilometers north of Cape Town , about two kilometers from the mouth of the Berg River in the Atlantic . In 2011 the city had 11,017 inhabitants.
The name Velddrif came about when a farmer, Theunis Smit, grazed his cattle on a piece of land ( afrikaans : veld ) on both sides of the Berg River and the animals moved from one side to the other via a ford (afrikaans: drif ). A hand-operated ferry was built there in 1899 .
With the establishment of a canning factory at the beginning of the 20th century, a settlement developed there that was officially mentioned in 1946 and received city status in 1960 .

- The city is known as the destination of the Berg River Canoe Marathon held annually in July , which starts in Paarl and ends after four days and 208 kilometers in Port Owen, the port of Velddrif.
- The Rocherpan Nature Reserve is 25 kilometers north of Velddrif.
