Porterville is a town in the Bergrivier municipality , West Coast District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located about 140 kilometers north of Cape Town , 280 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Olifants Mountains. In 2011 the city had 7,057 inhabitants.
The town was founded in 1863 after Frederick John Owen divided his Pomona farm into several lots. The city was named after the then attorney general of the Cape Colony , William Porter. It received town charter in 1881. Today Porterville is known as the meeting place for South African paragliders .
