Annapolis Royal is a Canadian city in Annapolis County , Nova Scotia . It is located on the Annapolis River on one arm of the Bay of Fundy .
history
On the opposite side of the river from today's town, in 1605, with Fort Port Royal, the first (French) settlement in Canada was founded by Samuel de Champlain . Port Royal was a fortified trading post and not a purely military facility. After the fort was burned down by the British in 1613, Port Royal was rebuilt in its current location in the late 17th century. In 1710 the city was captured by the British and renamed Annapolis Royal in honor of Queen Anne . It was the capital of Nova Scotia until Halifax was founded in 1749. On November 29, 1892 the place was granted city rights.
Attractions
- The first fort from 1605 was discovered, excavated and reconstructed according to the original construction plans in the 1930s. As a national memorial site Port Royal Habitation , this facility can be visited today, whereby all rooms are designed and accessible.
- Fort Anne is another national memorial in the city center , which has been partially reconstructed. In the main house that has been preserved there is a museum on the city's history.
- To the west of Fort Anne is the Royal Historic Gardens , an area of 7 hectares that shows historical garden styles and horticultural methods.
- The Annapolis tidal power plant is located on the river , currently the third largest power plant of its kind in the world (albeit a long way from the two significantly larger plants in South Korea and France ).
