history
In 1514, Pedro de Salazar was sent from Hispaniola by Lucas de Allyon to explore the coasts of America . He landed near Port Royal. In 1525 Spain sent another expedition to the area to build a fortress.
In 1562 a group of French Huguenots landed in the region under Jean Ribault and founded a fortress called Charles Forte . Three years later the settlement was disbanded by a Spanish squadron. British settled the area from 1710. On August 27, 1893, a hurricane , the Sea Islands Hurricane , devastated Port Royal, killing several thousand people.
In 1959 it was decided to actively operate the town's port again, including for the export of kaolin , which meant a significant boom for the city.
geography
Port Royal is located on Port Royal Sound or the Broad River , which flows into the bay.
The old town of Port Royal is at the southern end of the headland that juts into Port Royal Sound. The road system is systematically built in a north-south and west-east direction. The streets in north-south direction are the most important streets in the district; they are named after the cities of origin of the first immigrants. The Paris Avenue is the main shopping street of Port Royal. There is a small beach at the southern end.
Port Royal is accessible via US Highway 21 , and South Carolina Highways 128 , 170 and 281 are also accessible. The former railway connection via the Port Royal and Augusta Railway and the Port Royal Railroad have now been discontinued; the Port Royal Railroad is accessible to tourists via a hiking trail ( Spanish Moss Trail ).

Port Royal was recently characterized by very strong population growth. As part of the US Census 2000 , Port Royal had 3950 inhabitants; on the cut-off date of the following census in 2010 , 10,678 people lived in Port Royal. This corresponds to an increase in the population of more than 270 percent within a decade. For 2019, the population was already estimated at 13,235 as part of the Population Estimates Program , which corresponds to a population growth of over 25% within ten years. While the growth is still well above the average population growth in the United States of around 6 percent per decade, it has presumably cooled significantly compared to the same period last year.
