Bernard de Dryver
Bernard de Dryver (born September 19, 1952 in Brussels ) is a former Belgian racing driver .
Beginnings in motorsport
Bernard de Dryver began his career in the early 1970s in national Formula Ford races in Belgium. He contested his first international races in 1975 when he entered the Formula 2 European Championship . Although the Belgian still had few successes, he tried to get into the Formula 1 World Championship in 1977 .
In Formula 1
The British Formula One Racing Team , founded in 1977 by British racing driver Brian Henton and journalist Don Shaw, had a free cockpit for the Belgian Grand Prix . De Dryver managed to raise the necessary sponsorship funds and tried to qualify for the race with the March 761 . In qualifying, he missed participating in the race by just under a second.
In 1979 he played a full season in the British Formula 1 Championship . On a Fittipaldi F5A , he finished fourth overall behind Rupert Keegan , Dave Kennedy and Emilio de Villota .
Long career in sports car racing
After some unsuccessful attempts at monopostor races, the Belgian turned to sports car racing in the late 1970s. Until his retirement in 2008, he competed in almost all major European sports car races. In 1983 he finished fourth overall in the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race and in 1987 third there.
He celebrated his greatest international success in 1987 when he finished second overall in the Le Mans 24-hour race .
