British Formula One Racing Team

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

British Formula One Racing Team was a UK- based Formula 1 racing team that entered five Formula 1 races in 1977 . The team started as a so-called customer team with a purchased car from March . It could not qualify for any world championship run.

history

The British Formula One Racing Team was founded in 1977 by racing driver Brian Henton and journalist Don Shaw. Henton had contested two rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship for the Lotus team in 1975 . In the 1977 season he received a contract for a race with the March factory team, which competed at times under the name Rothmans International . After that, there were no opportunities for further involvement with an existing team. In order to continue to participate in Formula 1 races, Henton founded his own racing team. He bought a used March 761 from March, powered by an older Cosworth DFV eight-cylinder engine.

In 1977 the team registered for four grand prizes as well as a Formula 1 race that was not part of the world championship. In the late summer of 1977 the racing stable was closed again after the funds were used up.

At the end of the season, Henton drove two more races for the Dutch team HB Bewaking Systems . After three years in Formula 2 , he returned to Formula 1 with the newly founded Toleman team . In 1982 he drove a few races for Arrows and Tyrrell , but did not reach positions in the points with any of the teams. After that, Henton ended his racing career.

The team's emergency vehicle: The March 761

British Formula One Racing made its debut at the XII, which was not part of the Formula 1 World Championship . Race of Champions held at Brands Hatch on March 20, 1977 . In qualifying, Henton achieved pole position with his March 761 ahead of Alex-Dias Ribeiro's works March . He finished the race as the best private driver in fourth place. It was the only race that Henton competed in with his own team.

The team's first world championship run was the Spanish Grand Prix , held in Jarama in May 1977 . Henton missed qualification here by 0.3 seconds. The team skipped the subsequent Monaco Grand Prix because Henton did not think there would be any chance of making it into the circle of 20 vehicles registered for the race. The next announcement came at the Belgian Grand Prix . Here Henton left the car to Belgian racing driver Bernard de Dryver , who paid for the cockpit. De Dryver missed qualifying by a second; he was 5.7 seconds behind the pole time of James Hunt in the factory McLaren . For the Grand Prix of Great Britain Henton came back on itself. For this race stood beside the factory teams of eight customer teams. Only two of them - Team Merzario and Williams Grand Prix Engineering - qualified. Henton's British Formula One Racing Team was the best of the unskilled customer teams; the gap to the last starting position was 0.5 seconds. The Austrian Grand Prix was the last Formula 1 race to which the British Formula One Team was entered. Here, too, there was no participation in the race. Henton missed qualifying by 0.1 seconds.
