Reports
background
At the Canadian Grand Prix, which took place as the penultimate race of the season, Niki Lauda , who was already world champion, no longer competed . Instead, Gilles Villeneuve , who was already Lauda's successor from the 1978 season, took over the second Ferrari cockpit on the occasion of his home Grand Prix. The original plan was to use a third works car for Villeneuve, which Lauda's non-participation made superfluous.
Riccardo Patrese returned to the Shadow team, which meant that Jean-Pierre Jarier , who had represented him at the US Grand Prix the previous weekend, did not have a free cockpit.
There were no other changes in the field of drivers in the week between the two races on the North American continent.
training
The risk to safety from the numerous bumps on the racetrack was discussed in advance. During training it became clear that this concern was justified, because Ian Ashley rolled over in his Hesketh 308 after driving over one of the dreaded bumps. The car flew over the guardrails and Ashley suffered serious injuries. Later that day, Jochen Mass slipped into the inadequately fastened guardrails, which did not withstand the impact, which also confirmed the lack of safety on the racetrack.
With a lap time almost six tenths of a second faster than second-placed James Hunt , Mario Andretti achieved his sixth pole position of the season. It was followed by Ronnie Peterson in the Tyrrell P34 in front of Andretti's Lotus team- mate Gunnar Nilsson , Hunt's McLaren- mate Jochen Mass and his own team-mate Patrick Depailler . The two Shadow pilots Alan Jones and Riccardo Patrese formed the fourth row on the grid.
Jean-Pierre Jabouille failed to qualify with the Renault RS01 .
run
Andretti took the lead ahead of Hunt and Mass. This order of the top three remained constant over the first 60 laps of the race. Only the gap to third-placed Mass increased significantly.
On the 61st lap, Hunt took the lead from Andretti, when both of them ran up to measure that had to be lapped. There was a misunderstanding between the two McLaren drivers, which led to a collision. Andretti took over the lead again, but had to retire on lap 78 due to an engine failure. Vittorio Brambilla , who was third at the time, slipped on oil, which Andretti's car had lost, and crashed into Riccardo Patrese's car parked at the edge of the track.
Jody Scheckter was the first to cross the finish line after exactly 1: 40: 00.00, followed by Patrick Depailler and Jochen Mass, who initially dropped to seventh place after the collision. Alan Jones was fourth ahead of Patrick Tambay . Brambilla was classified in sixth due to his late failure.
Jochen Mass's podium finish was the last of a German driver up to Michael Schumacher's third place at the 1992 Mexican Grand Prix .
