The 2011 Canadian Grand Prix took place on June 12th on the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Monaco Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 58 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 64 points ahead of Mark Webber . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 61 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 129 points ahead of Ferrari .
Pedro de la Rosa returned to Formula 1 as a driver in this Grand Prix as a replacement for Sergio Pérez at Sauber . With Michael Schumacher (42) and de la Rosa (40 ), two over 40-year-olds took part in a race for the first time since the 1980 Italian Grand Prix (then Vittorio Brambilla and Mario Andretti ; also 42 and 40 years old).
At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with soft (yellow) and supersoft (red) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions . In addition, the teams received the tire compound medium (white) for test purposes on Friday .
With Schumacher (seven times), Hamilton (twice) and Fernando Alonso (once), three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice session, Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap ahead of Alonso and Schumacher. In this training, Nico Hülkenberg took over Force India from Adrian Sutil and Daniel Ricciardo took over the Toro Rosso from Sébastien Buemi . The training had to be interrupted after an accident by Vettel in turn 15. Vettel hit the curb, slipped off the track and hit the so-called "Wall of Champions" .
Sauber driver Pérez, who was back in the car for the first time after his accident in Monaco, complained of malaise after the first free practice and was replaced at short notice by de la Rosa for the rest of the weekend. At that time, De la Rosa did not own a Sauber racing suit and therefore took part in the second free practice session in the Sauber C30 in a McLaren racing suit . De la Rosa was originally in Montreal as a replacement driver for McLaren.
In the second free practice session, Alonso finally set the fastest time ahead of Vettel and Felipe Massa . There were three accidents during training. Sutil lost his racing car in the wall at the Pont de la Concorde . Kamui Kobayashi and Jérôme D'Ambrosio retired after touching the wall at Turn 4. After the accidents in Kobayashi and D'Ambrosio, training to rescue the vehicles was interrupted. In the third free practice session, Vettel was the fastest pilot. Alonso and Rosberg followed in second and third place. The free practice session was canceled shortly after the 60-minute practice period was over because de la Rosa had lost control of his vehicle at turn 4 and hit the wall. Webber had to skip the last training session because of a defective KERS battery.
Qualifying
Alonso posted the fastest lap in the first section of qualifying. The Virgin , HRT and Lotus pilots as well as Jaime Alguersuari were eliminated. D'Ambrosio failed to qualify. He was subsequently admitted to the race because he had achieved sufficient time in the first free practice. In the second qualification segment, Massa took over the leadership position. The Williams , Force India and Sauber pilots and Buemi were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel finally prevailed. This is the 100th time that a German driver has achieved pole position . Ferrari drivers Alonso and Massa started the race from positions two and three.
run
The Canadian Grand Prix started behind the safety car because the track was too wet. The race was finally released for the fifth lap. In the Virage Senna there was a collision between Webber and Hamilton, who started the race from fourth and fifth. Both drove on and only Webber fell far behind. At the top, Vettel kept the lead in front of Alonso and Massa.
After Hamilton was overtaken by Schumacher and his team-mate Jenson Button , the McLaren drivers collided on lap eight. Hamilton had come out of the last corner better and was next to him on the start-finish straight. Button closed the door and both pilots collided. Hamilton damaged the suspension so badly that he parked the car a little later. Button drove on and switched to intermediate tires.
The accident triggered a safety car phase. The race was reopened on lap 13, while the rain got heavier. Vettel kept the lead at the restart. Button was given a drive-through penalty for disregarding the maximum speed behind the safety car. In the next few laps it became clear that Button's switch to intermediate tires was the right decision. Within one lap he improved from 15th place to eleventh place. As a result, some other riders started switching to intermediate tires as well. However, Vettel and Massa at the top stayed on the full wets .
On the 19th lap it began to rain so heavily that the race management sent the safety car out onto the track for safety reasons. As a result, all drivers who were still on intermediate tires had to switch back. Vettel also went to the pits to put on fresh full wets. One lap later he took the lead back from Massa, who also had his tires replaced. The second pilot at this point was Kobayashi, who had not yet pitted. After Vettel, who was in the lead, repeatedly mentioned the inability to drive under these conditions by radio, the race was interrupted on the 25th lap with the red flag.
During the interruption, the teams had the opportunity to adjust the vehicle's setting for rainy conditions. In addition, all pilots were allowed to change their tires. Without further ado, Mercedes pitched tents over their vehicles so that it didn't rain in too hard. After a break of more than two hours, the race was restarted behind the safety car. During the safety car phase, Heikki Kovalainen retired with a drive shaft damage.
At the restart on lap 35 there was a duel for second position between Kobayashi and Massa. Massa initially overtook his opponent, but he countered. As the track dried up, the drivers switched to intermediate tires on the following laps. However, D'Ambrosio was given a drive-through penalty due to his early tire change, as the change to intermediate tires was only allowed after the race was released and he completed his stop one lap too early.
On the 37th lap, the safety car had to go out again. Alonso had collided with Button at turn four. The Ferrari was so badly damaged that it could no longer drive. Button drove to the pits for a repair stop. He fell back to last place, but stayed in the leading lap. Vettel used the safety car phase to change tires and he stayed in the lead ahead of Kobayashi and Massa.
The race was reopened on the 41st lap. Vettel kept the lead and Kobayashi defended second position. After the restart, there were several contacts. Sutil started at Rosberg. His suspension was so badly damaged that he gave up a few laps later. Paul di Resta , who was in fifth place, tried to drive past Nick Heidfeld , who was lying in front of him . In the process, di Resta damaged his front wing and he had to pit for a repair stop.
While Vettel took the lead, Button and Schumacher had good times. At this point Button was in 14th position, Schumacher initially took fourth place after an overtaking maneuver against Heidfeld and then overtook Massa and Kobayashi, which put him in second place. From the 50th lap the drivers began to switch to dry tires. After Massa's switch to dry tires, his podium chances were negated by a collision with an HRT that he lapped. He lost his front wing and had to pit for repairs.
While Button was already in fifth place in the meantime, another safety car phase was triggered. Heidfeld had collided with Kobayashi, which resulted in parts of the track. Kobayashi drove on, Heidfeld dropped out.
With ten laps to go, the race was released again. Vettel kept the lead in front of Schumacher, Webber and Button. First, Webber overtook Schumacher, but he shortened the route and had to let him by again. When Webber took another short cut, Button passed him. In the meantime, Pastor Maldonado had retired due to a driving error. Button overtook Schumacher on lap 65 and Webber also passed Schumacher two laps later. Shortly before the end, di Resta also had an accident after a driving mistake, but he was classified.
At the top, Button caught up with Vettel with faster laps. On the last lap Button was less than a second behind. During this lap, Vettel spun, Button took the lead and won the Canadian Grand Prix. It was Button's first win of the season. Vettel crossed the finish line in second place ahead of his team-mate Webber. Schumacher was fourth, Vitali Petrow fifth .
For sixth place there was a duel between Kobayashi and Massa on the home straight, which Massa won with 0.045 seconds ahead. The other points went to Alguersuari, who scored for the first time this season, Rubens Barrichello and Buemi.
In the drivers' world championship, Button took second place behind Vettel. Webber remained third. There were no changes at the top in the constructors' championship. HRT took over eleventh place from Virgin thanks to a 13th place from Vitantonio Liuzzi . It remained HRT's best ranking this season. Virgin did not manage to regain this position for the rest of the season, although Virgin won the duel against HRT in each of the following races.
Records
Several records were set in the race:
- With a total duration of 4: 04: 39.537 hours, it is the longest race in Formula 1 history to date. It replaced the 1954 German Grand Prix as the previous record holder with 3: 45: 45.800 hours. The Indianapolis 500 , which used to be part of the World Cup, was longer between 1951 and 1956 than Germany in 1954, but shorter than Canada in 2011.
- At the same time, it was the slowest race (average speed 74.864 km / h). The previous record holder was the Monaco Grand Prix in 1950 .
- With Jenson Button, a driver won a Grand Prix for the first time who had to go through the pit lane six times.
- Likewise, for the first time, a driver who was last five laps after half of the race (lap 40 of 70) won.
- The safety car was used in five phases for a total of 30 laps. This also set a new record here (previously the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix with 26 laps).
