The 2014 Canadian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2014 ) took place on June 8th on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

background

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 61 points ahead of Fernando Alonso . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 141 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 162 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There are two DRS zones, the first zone began after the pits hairpin , exactly 55 meters before the next full throttle curve. The second zone was on the start-and-finish straight and began 70 meters after the last corner. Just like at the season opener in Australia , there was only one measuring point for both DRS zones , so that in the event of a successful overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the driver ahead could use the DRS again in the second zone.

Kimi Räikkönen started at this Grand Prix for the 200th time in Formula 1.

Jules Bianchi , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Kevin Magnussen and Adrian Sutil (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (three times), Raikkonen, Alonso, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Derek Daly ( IRL ), Mike Kaerne ( CAN ), Radovan Novak ( CZE ) and Lars Österlind ( SWE ) acted as race stewards .

training

In the first free practice, Alonso set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Rosberg. Alexander Rossi took over the Caterham from Kamui Kobayashi in this training . All drivers only drove on the harder of the two tire compounds and were within the 107 percent time . There were a number of brakes in front of the Pont de la Concorde and the Pits Hairpin , mostly as a result of problems with the coordination of the brake-by-wire system on the rear axle. Bianchi hit the barrier wall with his Marussia, damaging the suspension of his car. The gearbox also had to be changed. Daniel Ricciardo was cautioned by the race stewards after he overtook Maldonado in the pit lane.

In the second free practice, Hamilton drove the fastest lap ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. A tricky scene occurred when Sutil ran into the extremely slow Magnussen in the chicane in front of the start and finish straight and was only able to avoid a collision by using the emergency exit. After changing the gearbox as a result of his accident in the first practice session, Bianchi had further technical problems and was only able to drive three installation laps. Like Ericsson, who suffered a gearbox failure, he lagged behind the 107 percent time.

In the third free practice, Hamilton stayed in front. Felipe Massa came second, Rosberg third.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was the fastest driver. Esteban Gutiérrez did not set any time and therefore failed to qualify. He was allowed to start from the pit lane. The Caterham and Marussia pilots and Maldonado were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton stayed in the lead. The Force India pilots as well as Sutil, Romain Grosjean , Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Rosberg set the fastest time and thus the pole position ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

Because of a gear change, Kobayashi received a starting place penalty of five positions.

run

Hamilton started better than Rosberg, but was almost pushed off the track by Rosberg on the outside lane in the first corner and fell back to third behind Vettel. In the fourth corner, Chilton lost control of his Marussia and slipped his left front wheel against the right rear wheel of his team mate Bianchi. Bianchi spun, hit the wall on the fifth corner and badly damaged the car. Chilton stopped after turn five with a broken front left wheel suspension. Both drivers retired. It was Chilton's first retirement in Formula 1. The safety car went out on the track so that the vehicles could be recovered. Before the race was reopened, Ericsson gave up the race. After the race, Chilton was given a starting place penalty of three starting places in the following race.

At the restart, Rosberg stayed in the lead. Two laps later, Hamilton drove past Vettel into second position. At this point he was about two seconds behind the leading Rosberg. On the 18th lap, Rosberg was one of the last drivers from the leading group - but before Hamilton - to his first pit stop. Despite making a small mistake in the outlap, he kept the lead over Hamilton after he pitted a lap later.

In the next laps Hamilton caught up a little on Rosberg and was several times less than a second behind Rosberg at the DRS measuring point. On the 25th lap, Rosberg braked before the last bend and drove straight through the emergency exit. This increased his lead over Hamilton to around 1.5 seconds, and this was also the fastest lap of the race at the time. The incident was investigated by the race control, but there was no penalty. Shortly before, Maldonado and Kobayashi had failed.

On the 38th lap, the two Mercedes drivers, who were by a large margin in front, had their ERS-K out, so their lap times increased by around three seconds per lap. Since the team's engineers couldn't find a way to fix the problem, both Mercedes drivers changed their tactics and got fresh tires in the pit lane to be able to better defend themselves on the track against the now much faster pursuers. Both drivers fell behind Massa, who had just been to the pits. Hamilton passed Rosberg. In the 46th and 47th laps, Hamilton braked himself several times, and smoke could also be seen on his right rear wheel. He gave up shortly afterwards with a brake failure. The defect was a result of the missing ERS-K, as the brakes were more heavily loaded after the failure, as well as the direct driving behind competitors. A lap later, Kvyat was also eliminated with a technical problem.

After Massa pitted, Rosberg led Ricciardo and Vettel in front of Pérez, who was on a one-stop strategy. The first four drivers were within two seconds. Due to the fresher tires, Rosberg was always able to extend his lead to around 1.5 seconds up to the DRS measuring point, so that Pérez could not catch up enough on the two long straights to attack Rosberg despite the lack of performance from Rosberg's ERS-K. In the meantime, Massa drove the fastest laps and overtook several drivers, so that he finally joined the leading quartet and the first five vehicles were within two seconds.

Pérez had braking problems, initially lost contact with Rosberg and was overtaken by Ricciardo shortly afterwards. Ricciardo also passed Rosberg with three laps to go and for the first time in his career took the lead in a Formula 1 race. On the penultimate lap, Vettel passed Pérez into third position. On the last lap there was a collision between Pérez and Massa on the start-and-finish straight, in which Vettel was almost also involved. Massa ran into Pérez with a clear excess of speed and wanted to overtake him on the inside lane when Massa's right front wheel and Pérez's left rear wheel touched. Both vehicles hit the tire wall violently and were severely damaged, the pilots were uninjured. The race ended behind the safety car. The race stewards blamed Pérez for the accident and punished him after the race with a starting place penalty of five starting places at the next Grand Prix.

Ricciardo thus achieved his first Formula 1 victory before Rosberg and Vettel. Button was fourth, Hulkenberg fifth. Alonso, Bottas, Vergne, Magnussen and Räikkönen completed the top 10. Only eleven of the 22 drivers who started made it to the finish.

In the driver's world championship, Rosberg extended his lead over Hamilton. Ricciardo took third position. The first three positions of the constructors remained unchanged, Red Bull narrowed the gap to Mercedes a little.
