Reports
background
Derek Warwick , who at the beginning of the season did not get the place he had hoped for in the Lotus team due to Ayrton Senna's negative attitude , succeeded the fatally injured Elio de Angelis at Brabham .
Marc Surer sustained serious injuries in the course of an accident at the Hessen Rally and had to end his Formula 1 career. The Arrows team then hired Christian Danner as a substitute driver. However, since he was contractually bound to Osella , he still had to compete for this team. He only found out about it when he was already buckled into the Arrows A8 and wanted to start training.
training
Nigel Mansell secured pole position from Ayrton Senna . This was followed by Nelson Piquet before Alain Prost , Arnoux and Keke Rosberg .
run
In the warm-up is moved Patrick Tambay injuries on his feet and had to give up participating in the race.
Mansell took the lead and quickly gained a lead, as Senna seemed to be holding back the drivers behind them, Prost, Piquet, Rosberg and Arnoux. On the fifth lap, Prost managed to overtake the Brazilian. He had to evade and thus drive an unfavorable curve line, whereby Rosberg, Piquet and Arnoux also passed him.
Up to the 17th lap, Rosberg fought his way past Prost and Mansell to the top. Since he noticed that he was using too much fuel with this driving style, he slowed down a little so that the two people who had passed before could catch up with him again. In the course of lapping Alan Jones on lap 22, Mansell took advantage of a slight inattention by Rosberg to take the lead again. Since he still had sufficient fuel reserves, he gained another lead and won.
Prost, who had also overtaken his team-mate Rosberg, fell back to fifth place after a pit stop that took a long time due to a jammed wheel nut. By the end of the race, however, he fought his way back up to second place. Piquet was third ahead of Rosberg, Senna and Arnoux.
