background
As a result of Elio de Angelis' fatal accident in May, the decision was made to hold the French Grand Prix on a shortened version of the Circuit Paul Ricard that did not include the section of the route in which the accident occurred and also almost two in total The kilometer-long Mistral straight, which reached very high speeds, was halved.
Patrick Tambay returned to the field after a three-week injury break.
training
Ayrton Senna secured pole position for the fifth time this season. Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet followed again in second and third place on the grid. René Arnoux qualified fourth ahead of Alain Prost and Michele Alboreto .
run
While Alboreto dropped to 24th place due to a mistake at the start, Mansell took the lead ahead of Senna and Arnoux. Teo Fabi and Derek Warwick collided during the first lap . Both had to go to the pits for repairs on their vehicles.
In the fourth round Senna came on oil, which the Minardi M185B of Andrea de Cesaris had lost due to engine failure, to slide, crashed into the barriers and retired. Mansell was leading by a clear margin over Arnoux. Gerhard Berger , who was third at the time , was put under pressure by the two McLaren drivers Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg and was able to withstand this up to the ninth lap. Shortly after falling behind the two opponents, he collided with Christian Danner and had to make an unscheduled pit stop that pushed him back to 16th place.
By the 18th lap, both McLaren drivers passed Arnoux into second and third place. When Mansell had his tires changed in the pits, Prost took the lead, which the Briton regained on lap 37, taking advantage of the new tires. He finally won ahead of Prost and Piquet. Rosberg finished fourth in front of the two Ligier drivers René Arnoux and Jacques Laffite .
