The 2018 French Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Pirelli Grand Prix de France 2018 ) took place on June 24th at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet and was the eighth race of the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship .

After the Canadian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 35 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 17 points and Red Bull Racing with 72 points .
At the French Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
The French Grand Prix was part of the Formula 1 racing calendar for the first time since 2008 . The last time the race took place at Circuit Paul Ricard was in 1990 , but on a track variant that was around two kilometers shorter. Since then, the line has been completely rebuilt and modernized.
Marcus Ericsson , (seven), Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Max Verstappen (five each), Brendon Hartley (four), Kimi Räikkönen , Sergio Pérez , Stoffel Vandoorne , Vettel (three each), Pierre Gasly , Nico Hülkenberg , Daniel Ricciardo , Sergei Sirotkin (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso (one each), two former winners competed in this Grand Prix. Both won the race when it was held at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours .
Race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Yannick Dalmas (FRA), Jean-Marie Krempff (FRA) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN).
free training
Hamilton was fastest in the first free practice with a lap time of 1: 32.231 minutes ahead of Bottas and Ricciardo. The training session was stopped a few minutes before the end after Ericsson hit the barrier and the vehicle caught fire. After the first free practice session, the speed limit was reduced from 80 to 60 km / h.
In the second free practice, Hamilton was again fastest in 1: 32.539 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Verstappen.
In the third free practice session, Bottas set the fastest time in 1: 33.666 minutes ahead of Sainz and Charles Leclerc . After a few minutes it started to rain, so that most drivers only drove a few installation laps.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. The Williams and McLaren drivers and Hartley were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. The Mercedes and Red Bull drivers drove their fastest lap on the Supersoft compound, all others on Ultrasoft . Hamilton was again fastest. Ericsson, Pierre Gasly , the Force India drivers and Hulkenberg were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 30.029 minutes ahead of Bottas and Vettel. It was the 74th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship.
Hartley was moved to the end of the field this season because of the use of the fourth internal combustion engine, the fourth turbocharger , the fourth MGU-H , the third MGU-K , the third energy storage device and the third control electronics.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Verstappen and Raikkonen. Ricciardo, Vettel, Magnussen, Bottas, Sainz, Hülkenberg and Leclerc took the further points.
Hamilton thus took the lead in the overall standings from Vettel, Ricciardo was now third. The first three places in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
