The Haas VF-18 is the Formula 1 - racing car of Haas for Formula 1 2018 World Cup . It is the team's third Formula 1 car and was presented on the team's website on February 14, 2018 as the first vehicle from the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship.
The name of the car is a reference to the VF-1, the first CNC machine that Haas Automation produced. Although the V stands for vertical , the name of the machine was used in-house as an abbreviation for Very First One (German: Allererste ).
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2018, the VF-18 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, many other parts of the vehicle, including the body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a heat-resistant carbon fiber reinforced composite material.
Since the technical regulations for the 2018 season remained largely stable, the VF-18 has largely been further developed from the previous model, the VF-17 .
VF-18 is driven by a in the center of the vehicle -mounted 1.6 liter V-6 engine of Ferrari with a turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The car's sequential gearbox is supplied by Ferrari and has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. Haas also uses Ferrari's rear suspension. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
The total width of the vehicle is 2000 mm, the width between the front and rear axles 1600 mm, the height 950 mm. The front wing has a width of 1800 mm, the rear wing of 950 mm and a height of 800 mm. The diffuser has a total height of 175 mm and a width of 1050 mm. The car is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels.
Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the VF-18 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
Unlike its predecessor, the VF-18 is equipped with the Halo system , which provides additional protection for the driver's head. This system increases the weight of the vehicle to 733 kg. The eye-catching fin on the engine cover that the previous model had is much smaller due to a change in the technical regulations.
The front wing of the vehicle is much more complex than was the case with the VF-17. The attachment of the wing has also been changed, while the side air deflectors are still attached at the level of the front wheels. The side pods, however, have been redesigned and are reminiscent of the fes Ferrari SF70H . The air inlet above the cockpit has changed significantly compared to the previous model, it is no longer triangular, but oval. The rear wing is still attached to two struts, whereas most competing vehicles only had one central bracket last year.
Painting and sponsorship
The VF-18 is mainly painted in gray, black and red.
Haas Automation, the company of team owner Gene Haas , advertises on the side pods and the rear wing, the Swiss watch manufacturer Richard Mille on the side of the monocoque and the wind tunnel operator Windshear on the front wings.
driver
Haas will compete again in the 2018 season with drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen .
