St-Arbogast is a church of the Lutheran Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine in Bourgheim ( Bas-Rhin department ) in France . The Church has been inscribed on the French Heritage Register since 1986.

history

St-Arbogast is an essentially Romanesque choir tower church , the construction of which is dated to the 12th century . The art historian Walter Hotz even assumes that it was built in the 11th century. It stands on an artificially raised hill that is said to date from Roman times. The first documentary mention was made in 1371. In 1554 the Reformation was introduced at the church . In 1688, by order of the French government, a simultaneum of Lutherans and Catholics was set up. The choir in the tower is still available for Roman Catholic worship today. The nave was given its shape in 1740. In the west wall there is a pointed arch portal and two Gothic lancet windows. In the south wall there is a walled-up portal with a Romanesque tympanum depicting the tree of life .
